Half-Life
Definition
The time required for the amount or concentration of a substance in a defined system to fall to one-half of a reference value.
What Half-Life means
In pharmacokinetics, half-life is commonly used to describe how quickly measured drug exposure declines over time. It is one parameter among many and can vary by formulation, route, population, and study design.
Why the distinction matters
A half-life is not the same thing as the duration of a noticeable effect, the time until a substance is completely gone, or a recommended dosing interval.
Common confusion
After one half-life, about half of the modeled amount remains; the substance is not necessarily eliminated and the clinical effect may follow a different time course.
