Investigational
Definition
A compound, product, or use that is being studied and has not received approval for general marketing for that use.
What Investigational means
Investigational status does not tell you whether a compound will eventually succeed or fail. It means the evidence and regulatory process are still incomplete for that product or use.
Why the distinction matters
A compound can have substantial human trial data and still remain investigational until the applicable regulatory review is complete.
Common confusion
Investigational does not mean the same thing as proven ineffective, and promising study results do not mean the same thing as approval.
