Definition
A control intervention designed to resemble the study treatment without containing the active study intervention being evaluated.
What Placebo means
Placebo controls can help separate treatment-specific effects from expectations, natural variation, background care, and other influences on measured outcomes.
Why the distinction matters
Not every trial uses a placebo; some questions are better answered using an active comparator or another control design.
