Agonist
Definition
A molecule that binds to a receptor and activates signaling through that receptor.
What Agonist means
Agonists can differ in selectivity, potency, duration, and the degree to which they activate receptor signaling. A compound may also act at more than one receptor.
Why the distinction matters
Terms such as single, dual, or triple agonist describe the receptor systems a compound is designed to activate; they do not by themselves establish clinical superiority.
Common confusion
More receptor targets does not automatically mean a compound is better, safer, or more effective. Those questions require direct evidence.
