Research & Regulation
Preclinical
Definition
Research conducted before or outside direct therapeutic testing in humans, often including laboratory and animal studies.
What Preclinical means
Preclinical work can clarify mechanisms, biological plausibility, toxicology, and whether a program is ready to advance into human testing.
Why the distinction matters
Animal or cell findings can be useful evidence, but they should not be presented as if they are the same as demonstrated clinical outcomes in people.
Common confusion
A positive animal or in-vitro result is not equivalent to human clinical evidence.
